A Taste of Summer | Original Tomato Acrylic Painting

There's something rather beautiful about tomatoes before they've been picked. The way they hang together in little clusters, the twisting green stems and the subtle differences in colour between each fruit make them a surprisingly interesting subject to paint.

A Taste of Summer is my original acrylic painting of ripe red tomatoes, painted by hand on a 13 × 18 cm canvas board. I wanted to capture the warmth and richness of their colour while paying particular attention to the shapes, shadows and highlights that give each tomato its rounded appearance.

Working with reds is particularly interesting because the colour changes so much depending on how the light catches the surface. I've used variations of coral, crimson, scarlet and deeper red tones to create depth, with lighter areas bringing a sense of shine to the tomato skins. The green stems and leaves provide contrast, breaking up the rounded shapes and adding movement to the composition.

What I enjoy most about painting food is taking something we see every day and giving it the attention we'd usually reserve for a more traditional artistic subject. A few tomatoes hanging from a vine might not sound particularly exciting, but when you look closely, there's an entire arrangement of colour, form and texture waiting to be explored.

At 13 × 18 cm, this original tomato painting is a lovely size for a kitchen, dining room or a collection of small contemporary still-life paintings. It brings a little of that late-summer feeling indoors, without needing a particularly large space.

This is a one-of-a-kind original acrylic painting, signed by me, with only one available. You're purchasing the actual piece I've painted, complete with the individual details and character of an original artwork.

Fine art prints of A Taste of Summer are also available for anyone who loves the painting but would prefer a different size, format or a more affordable option.
