At the Heart of It | Original Avocado Acrylic Painting

Cutting into an avocado reveals an extraordinary range of greens. The dark outer skin gives way to pale, almost yellow flesh surrounding a large brown stone, with the colours gradually changing as they move towards the edges. It's this natural transition that first made me want to paint one.

At the Heart of It is my original acrylic painting of two avocado halves, one with its stone still in place, created by hand on a 13 × 18 cm canvas board. I was particularly interested in the contrast between the two halves and how something so familiar can create such a balanced composition.

The exposed flesh has a softness that's quite different from the rougher, darker skin. I've worked with layers of greens, from pale lime and yellow-green through to deeper olive tones, using subtle changes in colour to suggest the curved surfaces. The stone provides a focal point, with warmer browns and highlights giving it a rounded, solid appearance against the surrounding green.

One of the most interesting aspects of this painting was exploring the relationship between shape and negative space. The two halves share the same basic form, but the presence of the stone changes how we see each one. Their arrangement creates a natural balance without making the composition completely symmetrical.

I enjoy finding these small details in ordinary subjects. Avocados are everywhere these days, but looking beyond their familiarity reveals something genuinely interesting in their structure, colour and texture. It's a reminder that still-life painting doesn't have to involve elaborate arrangements to be visually engaging.
