Perfectly Preserved | Original Pickle Acrylic Painting

Perfectly Preserved | Original Pickle Acrylic Painting

A jar of pickles might not be the most obvious subject for a painting, but that's partly what made me want to paint one. There's a surprising amount going on inside an ordinary glass jar, from the shapes and colours of the gherkins to the tiny details that you probably wouldn't notice when you're making a sandwich.

Perfectly Preserved is my original acrylic painting of gherkins in a glass jar, created on a 13 × 18 cm canvas board. The composition brings together the deep greens of the pickles, the pale garlic and scattered peppercorns, all visible through the glass and surrounding brine.

One of the more interesting challenges with this painting was representing transparency using opaque acrylic paints. Glass doesn't really have a colour of its own, so I focused on the reflections, changes in tone and subtle highlights that suggest its curved surface. The overlapping gherkins create additional depth, while their uneven, textured skins contrast with the smooth appearance of the jar.

I particularly enjoy painting everyday objects that are rarely given much attention. A jar of pickles is such a familiar thing to find in a kitchen cupboard, yet when you look at it as a still-life subject, it becomes a collection of shapes, reflections and small details. Even the garlic and peppercorns have their part to play in the overall composition.

At 13 × 18 cm, this small original painting would suit a kitchen, dining room or a collection of contemporary food-inspired artwork. It's an unusual subject, but that's exactly why I like it.

This is a one-of-a-kind original acrylic painting, signed by me, with only one available. The artwork you receive is the actual painting I've created, rather than a reproduction.

Fine art prints of Perfectly Preserved are also available for anyone who loves the painting but would prefer a different size, format or a more affordable option.
