The Big Reveal | Original Banana Acrylic Painting

A partially peeled banana isn't a particularly traditional subject for a painting, but that's what I find interesting about it. The simple act of peeling the fruit completely changes its shape, creating folds, curves and overlapping surfaces that offer far more detail than you might expect.

The Big Reveal is my original acrylic painting of a partially peeled banana, created by hand on a 13 × 18 cm canvas board. Rather than painting a perfectly arranged bowl of fruit, I wanted to focus on a single, familiar object at the moment its shape begins to change.

The contrast between the outer peel and the exposed fruit is particularly interesting. The skin contains warmer yellows and deeper golden shadows, while the flesh has softer cream tones and much gentler changes in colour. I've used these differences to create a sense of depth and distinguish the smooth surface of the fruit from the more structured folds of the peel.

The hanging sections of banana skin introduce movement into the composition, with their curved edges and overlapping shapes creating areas of light and shadow. I particularly enjoyed working on the little details that make the peel appear to fold naturally rather than sit flat against the canvas.

There's a long tradition of still-life painting featuring carefully arranged fruit, but I like the idea of treating something as ordinary as a half-peeled banana with the same attention. It's an everyday object that becomes surprisingly sculptural when you start looking at its shapes rather than simply recognising what it is.

At 13 × 18 cm, this small original painting would work beautifully in a kitchen, dining room or amongst a collection of contemporary food-inspired artwork. Its simple composition also makes it an interesting standalone piece.

This is a one-of-a-kind original acrylic painting, signed by me, with only one available. You'll receive the actual hand-painted artwork, complete with the individual brushwork and details that make it unique.

Fine art prints of The Big Reveal are also available for anyone who loves the painting but would prefer a different size, format or a more affordable option.
