The Spice of Life | Original Chilli Acrylic Painting

Chillies have a wonderful sense of movement. Their curved shapes, tapered ends and glossy surfaces make them particularly satisfying to paint, especially when several are arranged together. Even without knowing how hot they are, there's something about that intense red colour that immediately suggests heat.

The Spice of Life is my original acrylic painting of red chillies, created by hand on a 13 × 18 cm canvas board. I wanted to explore the richness of their colour and the way light moves across their curved surfaces, creating highlights and shadows that help define each individual pepper.

Red is a colour with a surprising amount of variation. I've used a combination of scarlet, crimson and darker red tones to create depth, with brighter areas suggesting the smooth, slightly reflective skin of the chillies. The green stems provide a contrasting colour and help distinguish the individual shapes within the composition.

What I find particularly interesting about painting chillies is how much character comes from their form. Unlike perfectly rounded fruit, each chilli has its own bends, twists and irregularities. Capturing those differences gives the painting a sense of natural movement rather than making the arrangement feel too rigid.

There's also something appealing about taking an ingredient associated with heat and intensity and presenting it as a contemporary still-life painting. The subject is familiar, but the emphasis on colour, light and shape gives it a different way of being appreciated.

Measuring 13 × 18 cm, this original chilli painting would suit a kitchen, dining room or collection of food-inspired artwork. Its reds would work particularly well against a neutral wall or alongside other paintings from my original kitchen art collection.

This is a one-of-a-kind original acrylic painting, signed by me, with only one available. You'll receive the actual artwork I've created, including the individual brushwork and details of the original piece.

Fine art prints of The Spice of Life are also available for anyone who loves the painting but would prefer a different size, format or a more affordable option.
